Cultural Beliefs + Nature

 

Icelanders inhabit a unique place, whose landscapes evoke descriptions such as “a moonscape” “Tolkein’s Middle Earth” and “unearthly.”  An NPR story from 2007 (see link below) suggest that the still enduring belief in of “hidden people,” who dwell on and just below the earth’s surface likely originated as a way to help early farmers make sense of their brutal natural surroundings.
